The Long Wait Since 1988
In 1988, Lou Holtz’s Fighting Irish, led by stars like Tony Rice and Chris Zorich, rolled to a perfect 12-0 season and captured the National Championship. That was 37 years ago—the last time Notre Dame climbed to the top of the college football world.
Back then, gas was a buck a gallon gallon, a new car cost about 10 grand, and you couldn’t shop on Amazon—because the internet didn’t even exist.
Even Notre Dame tickets were only about $12.
37 years! It’s been a long dry spell—the longest in program history.
Big Stages, But No Trophy
Notre Dame hasn’t exactly been absent from the national spotlight. The Irish earned a shot in the 2012 BCS Championship Game and reached the College Football Playoff in both 2018 and 2020. Each time, however, the Irish came up short against college football’s modern heavyweights.
That’s why 2024 felt so different.
Behind stars like Riley Leonard, Xavier Watts, and Jack Kiser, Notre Dame stormed to 14 wins and a trip back to the National Championship Game. The Irish battled to the final stage with as much momentum as any team in decades.
But once again, the trophy slipped away.
Why 2025 Feels Different
That magical season has now raised expectations sky-high. With Marcus Freeman, the defending College Coach of the Year, steering the program, Notre Dame enters 2025 loaded with talent, depth, and leadership.
- On offense, Heisman candidate Jeremiyah Love is the explosive headliner.
- The offensive line is young but experienced, boasting tremendous depth and perhaps the strongest unit Notre Dame has fielded in years. Their ability to control the trenches could be the key to unlocking the Irish attack, and protecting a young quarterback.
- And speaking of a young quarterback, CJ Carr has virtually no experience but he is brimming with elite talent, and now has a vastly improved receiving corps. From transfers Malachi Fields and Will Pauling to rising stars Jordan Faison, Jayden Greathouse, and tight end Eli Raridon, the pass-catching talent around Carr has been upgraded in a big way.
On defense, the Irish bring back strength across the board:
- A deep defensive line built to disrupt. Two names to note: Bryce Young and Boubacar Traore.
- Drayk Bowen and Leonard Moore anchoring a fierce, playmaking core.
- And don’t overlook safety Adon Shuler, a rising star expected to be a key defensive standout in 2025.
The Road to Glory Begins in Miami
This week, the quest for a championship kicks off with a high-stakes showdown. The Irish face a top-10 Miami Hurricanes squad at Hard Rock Stadium—a venue where the crowd will be deafening and the intensity unmatched.
It’s the perfect stage to launch a season that could finally bring the National Championship back home to South Bend.
